Kyslytsia at the UN: Russia’s oil and gas revenues must be blocked

Ukraine has called on the UN to tighten sanctions against Russia to deprive the Kremlin of the resources to continue the war.

Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UN Serhiy Kyslytsia has called on the international community to tighten sanctions against Russia to deprive it of revenues from energy exports. Ukrinform reports.

“It is very important to block these revenue streams by strengthening primary and secondary sanctions against the Russian economy,” the diplomat noted.

Kyslytsia drew attention to the need to increase sanctions pressure on Russian oil export operations. According to him, currently the Russian Federation’s “shadow fleet”, consisting of over 600 vessels, transports about 90% of Russian oil.

He also warned about the environmental danger posed by Russian tankers. As an example, the diplomat mentioned the incident with two tankers in the Kerch Strait.

Among the proposed measures to tighten sanctions, Kyslytsia named:

• lowering the marginal price for Russian oil from $60 to $40 per barrel;

• sanctions against tanker captains and companies operating the “shadow fleet”;

• strengthening control over tanker insurance;

• banning access to ports for vessels from the “black list”.

“If we want to stop the war, we must cut off Putin’s money flows. Putin will only start thinking about peace when his entourage tells him that the money is over,” the permanent representative stressed.

The Ukrainian diplomat also supported new sanctions by the US, UK and EU aimed at the Russian “shadow fleet” and companies that serve the Kremlin’s economic interests.

The day before, USM reported that the largest importer of Russian LNG in the EU would reduce purchases by 80%.
