Russians claim damage to their own cables in the Baltic Sea

The damage was allegedly discovered in the exclusive economic zone of Finland, and restoration work is currently underway.

Damage to the Russian underwater communication cable “Kingisepp-Kaliningrad” was discovered in the Baltic Sea. This is claimed by Russian media.

According to available data, the damage occurred in the exclusive economic zone of Finland. Currently, the Russian vessel “Sivuch” is operating in this area, which is carrying out restoration work.

The 1,115 km long cable belongs to the Russian telecommunications company Rostelecom. It provides communication between the Russian mainland and its enclave.

At the same time, the head of the emergency department of the Finnish Ministry of Labor, Kari Klemm, said that back in December 2024, the authorities recorded a rupture of two underwater cables between St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad.

As a reminder, on December 28, the Finnish police and coast guard detained the tanker of the so-called shadow fleet of the Russian Federation Eagle S. The investigation believes that on December 25, the tanker damaged the Estlink 2 power cable, which connects Finland and Estonia, and also caused damage to four fiber-optic lines, stretching the anchor along the seabed for tens of kilometers.

During a search of the vessel, law enforcement officers found spy equipment that was used to monitor maritime activity in the region.

At the same time, during the port inspection, 32 technical defects were found on the tanker Eagle S. Three of them are so serious that the vessel cannot leave Finnish waters without immediate repairs.

Meanwhile, a number of officials in the United States and Europe believe that damage to the cables in the Baltic Sea are accidents caused by the emergency condition of the “shadow fleet” vessels, and not sabotage.

The day before, the Kremlin tried to discredit Ukraine, claiming that it was allegedly planning to blow up a foreign ship in the Baltic Sea.
