The losses due to the Russian terrorist attack on the Kakhovska hydroelectric power station have been counted – they turned out to be seven times greater than the initial estimates.

The amount of losses due to the explosion of the Kakhovska hydroelectric power station reached $14 billion. This was stated by the Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Svitlana Grinchuk, reports “Liga”.

According to her, the volume of lost water resources is comparable to half of the reserves of some African countries. About 30% of the Kherson region’s environmental protection fund was flooded and lost.

The government is currently looking for new sources of water supply to provide water to the population of the regions affected by the explosion of the hydroelectric power station. Foreign partners are also being involved to strengthen the water supply infrastructure.

However, the minister noted that Ukrainians will feel the consequences of the disaster for a long time.

Grinchuk said that since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, environmental damage has reached almost 3 trillion UAH – this is one of the largest amounts compared to other industries.

The first analysis, which was conducted in June 2023 by specialists from the Kyiv School of Economics together with the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Infrastructure, showed that the amount of direct damage due to the explosion of the Kakhovska HPP is at least $2 billion.

A year later, the report of the Cabinet of Ministers and the UN estimated the damage from the terrorist attack on the Kakhovska HPP at $11 billion.
