Denmark plans to build more than 20 warships

Denmark has decided to increase its defense budget and modernize its naval forces amid the worsening political situation in the world.

In the context of growing threats from Russia, which will be able to restore its military potential within two years, Denmark is stepping up the work of its armed forces. This was reported by Gospodarka Morska.

Particular attention is paid to the protection of important sea routes connecting the Baltic Sea with the North Sea, since their blocking could lead to global consequences – especially for the Baltic countries.

As part of the defense modernization, it is planned to purchase more than 20 new ships for operations in the Arctic region and the Baltic Sea.

In addition, it is planned to equip the fleet with specialized units to protect territorial waters and underwater infrastructure, as well as to lay sea mines in case of a threat.

Denmark is also considering the possibility of purchasing unmanned vehicles to increase the effectiveness of its defense. An important aspect of the modernization is the absence of submarines in the Danish Navy, which remained after the withdrawal of Norwegian units in the 2000s.

In the long term, Denmark plans to purchase new frigates, since the currently used ships, in particular, the Iver Huitfeldt class, will be considered obsolete in ten years.

Previously, USM wrote that Denmark will allocate an additional 50 billion kroner for the defense of the North Atlantic. The main areas of expenditure are the purchase of weapons for maritime operations, including ships, unmanned aerial vehicles and sea mines.

This decision is part of Denmark’s overall strategy to increase defense spending to 3% of GDP, which exceeds the country’s current obligations within NATO. The Danish government also plans additional investments after receiving new NATO goals for the alliance’s activity in the Arctic and North Atlantic regions.
