Illegal tanker fleet increased by 17%

A sharp increase in the number of vessels involved in the illegal transportation of oil may lead to another economic shock.

The number of tankers involved in the transportation of sanctioned oil has increased by 17% since the beginning of 2024. This is written by Splash with reference to the BRS report.

According to analysts’ estimates, the global fleet of so-called shadow tankers has grown to 787 units, which is equivalent to 8.5% of the total number of tankers. At the same time, the total tonnage of illegal tankers reaches 93.7 million tons — 13.7% of all vessels of this type.

One of the reasons for the growth of the so-called shadow fleet this year was the renewal of US sanctions against Venezuela.
