Lithuania terminates the agreement with Russia on merchant shipping

The government of Lithuania has approved the proposal to terminate the agreement with Russia on commercial shipping.

On Wednesday, October 23, the Cabinet of Ministers of Lithuania approved the proposal of the Ministry of Transport and Communications to terminate the agreement with Russia on commercial shipping, writes the Lithuanian newspaper Kauno diena.

After approval by the government, the President of Lithuania will be offered to submit an initiative to terminate the agreement on merchant shipping with the Russian Federation for consideration by the Seimas.

This agreement was concluded in 1993 and regulates the relations of the countries in the field of maritime transport. It includes the regulation of the organization of cargo transportation, cooperation between shipping or shipping-related companies and organizations, customs and other formalities at ports, etc.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications of the country believes that the agreement is not relevant for Lithuania. In addition, it is impossible, since any cooperation with Russia has stopped due to Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

As USM previously wrote, on October 16 it became known that Lithuania denounces the intergovernmental agreement with the Russian Federation on merchant shipping.
