The harvest in Romania will affect the transit of grain from Ukraine, experts say
An increase in the grain harvest in Romania in 2023 may limit Ukrainian supplies through the Black Sea port of Constanta.
The largest operator of the port of Constanta – Comvex – made a statement regarding the possible restriction of grain transit from Ukraine. This forecast was influenced by the increase in the harvest in Romania, writes Reuters.
“The new crops in Romania seem to be larger than last year, which means that there may be less space for Ukrainians. The operators will not harm their traditional customers,” said the president of the business association of the port of Constanţa and the manager of Comvex, Viorel Panait.
Constanta processes almost a third of Ukrainian grain exports since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. Last year, 8.6 million tons of Ukrainian grain were shipped through the port. In the first quarter of 2023 – 3.3 million tons.
According to forecasts, Romania will harvest 10.35 million tons of wheat this year, dramatically increasing the harvest compared to last year. Production of winter crops, including wheat, is expected to exceed the five-year average.
Experts also emphasize that Constanta needs investments and a unified IT system to combat congestion.
As previously reported by USM, the UDS sea fleet wants to be involved in the export of grain from Ukraine.
