The US has announced large-scale sanctions against the Russian tanker fleet
The new sanctions include Sovcomflot and 183 Russian vessels, mostly tankers of the so-called “shadow fleet.”
The decision was announced by the US Ministry of Finance.
It is noted that the vast majority of the tankers subject to sanctions are those that illegally transported Russian oil. The US is also imposing sanctions on two marine insurance providers based in Russia, the insurance company Ingosstrakh and the Alfastrakhovane group.
In total, the restrictions cover more than 400 individuals and organizations in the Russian energy sector that directly or indirectly provide financing for the Kremlin’s military machine.
Thus, the largest players in the Russian oil and gas industry have been sanctioned, including Gazprom Nafta and Surgutneftegaz, their subsidiaries, as well as two active liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminals – Portovaya and Cryogas Vysotsk.
“The United States is taking sweeping action against a key source of revenue for Russia to finance its brutal and illegal war against Ukraine. With today’s actions, we are increasing the sanctions risk associated with oil trade with Russia, including shipping and financial assistance in support of Russian oil exports,” said US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.
In addition, the US has approved a ban on its companies from providing oil production services in Russia, and has also blacklisted up to 30 Russian companies in this segment.
COSCO and several other Chinese shipping companies have previously been blacklisted by the US.
