Two-thirds of old tankers illegally transport oil

Almost 63% of all tankers built in 2009 or older trade in Iranian, Venezuelan and/or Russian oil under sanctions.

This estimate was presented by Gibson brokers. As analysts noted, it is currently difficult to assess the prospects of tanker write-offs and compare them with the existing order portfolio.

Meanwhile, according to the Greek company Xclusiv Shipbrokers, in 2030 approximately 48% of today’s tanker fleet will be over 21 years old.

It will be recalled that last week Great Britain announced that it will require vessels with “suspicious insurance” to provide detailed information about their insurance status when passing through the English Channel. Failure to provide approved insurance may result in vessel detention.

The country’s government noted that such a decision is another step to combat “malicious Russian-backed maritime activity near Great Britain.”

USM previously reported that 18 Russian oil tankers and four LNG tankers were under British sanctions.
