Ukrainian polar explorers dug a snow tunnel to quickly unload the “Noosphere”
Polar scientists at the Ukrainian station “Akademik Vernadskyi” dug a snow tunnel for more than a week before the arrival of the icebreaker “Noosphere”.
At the “Akademik Vernadsky” station, the polar explorers dug a snow tunnel to clear the way to the Jacky pier, the National Center for Scientific Research reported.
In a few weeks, the icebreaker “Noosphere” will arrive at the station, delivering cargo and a seasonal expedition.
The tunnel will help polar explorers quickly unload the ship. The length of the tunnel is about 40 m, and the width is 2 m.
Polar explorers excavate a passage to the second pier every year. There are two moorings near the station, the first is called a “slip” – boats and a powerful crane are used to lift ships ashore near it. This parking lot is used most of the time (as long as the ice situation allows), and access to it is always maintained.
The time for the second berth comes in the summer season, when the number of sea voyages at the station increases significantly. It is convenient because it is protected from waves, boats of various types can be moored near it and left for a certain time, instead of taking it out of the water every time.
