Bypassing the Russian Federation: warships passed through the channel to Poland

Minesweepers 258 “ORP Albatros” (602) and “ORP Mewa” (603) entered the Polish Channel to bypass Russia.

Minesweepers entered the shipping channel through the Vistula Spit, writes Gospodarka Morska.

The canal connects the Baltic Sea with the Vistula Bay and allows ships to enter the port of Elblung, bypassing the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation.

This is not the first time that Kormoran 2-class ships have passed through the Vistula Spit. “ORP Albatros” first appeared there in March 2023 and then in April during the Zalev 23 exercise.

Naval exercises have shown that the shipping channel on the Vistula Spit can be used by ships such as the Minehunter, which has a length of 58.5 meters and a maximum displacement of up to 900 tons.

The possibility of Kormoran 2-type minesweepers passing through the Vistula Lagoon is important for defense reasons, as it will allow them to operate in this water area, in particular, as intended, within the framework of detecting and neutralizing dangerous objects found underwater.

“ORP Albatros” and “ORP Mewa” are stationed in the naval port of Gdynia.

USM previously reported that the Gdynia Shipyard signed a contract with the Canadian company OSI Maritime Systems for the supply of equipment for frigates.
