The USA has adopted a ban on the import of Russian uranium
The United States Senate has passed legislation banning the import of Russian uranium. Now the document must be signed by the president.
Now the draft law banning the import of enriched uranium from Russia has been handed over to President Joe Biden for his signature, Bloomberg reports.
The document prohibits the import of enriched uranium from Russia 90 days after the law enters into force. However, temporary exceptions are possible. The ban will be in effect until January 2028.
The United States receives from the Russian Federation about 25% of enriched uranium, which is used as fuel for 90 nuclear reactors. Russia earns about $1 billion a year from this.
Substitution of uranium supplies from Russia may lead to an increase in the cost of enriched uranium by approximately 20%.
In December, the House of Representatives approved a bill that provides for the allocation of $2.7 billion for the development of the U.S. uranium industry, subject to the introduction of restrictions on imports from the Russian Federation.
