In Moldova, farmers threaten protests over discount on Ukrainian grain transit

Moldovan farmers have opposed the government’s decision to reduce rail transit tariffs for Ukrainian goods to Constanta by 50% and are allowing mass protests.

This is reported by the CursDeGuvernare publication.

The Forța Fermierilor association expressed concern over the increase in the transit of Ukrainian agricultural products and demanded that local farmers and exporters be involved in discussing this issue.

After a meeting with Prime Minister Vasile Tofan, the farmers said they may start mass protests if the authorities do not show progress in resolving the problem by August 21.

Farmers fear that cheaper Ukrainian products may create additional pressure on the Moldovan domestic market.

In turn, President Maia Sandu supported the government’s decision to facilitate the transit of Ukrainian grain, but stated that the authorities must find a mechanism to protect local producers.

As a reminder, last week the Moldovan government agreed with Ukraine to reduce tariffs for rail transit of goods by 50% from August 10 to December 31, 2026. Ukraine plans to more actively use the route through Moldova to the port of Constanta due to the complications of sea exports due to Russian attacks on ships and port infrastructure.
