The owners of the bunkering vessel reported suspicions due to pollution of the waters of the port of Chornomorsk

In the Odesa region, shipowners reported suspicions of pollution of the waters of the seaport “Chornomorsk” with more than 1.2 tons of oil products, which caused environmental damage of almost UAH 16 million.
This was reported by the Odesa Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
According to the investigation, the head of a private enterprise in the field of maritime transport purchased a bunkering vessel in 2021, but did not take care of its proper maintenance and safe operation.
“The shipowner ignored warnings about the emergency condition of the vessel and the high risk of its flooding. Despite being aware of the danger, she did not provide maintenance, did not organize a watchkeeping service, and did not comply with the requirements of the port administration regarding the vessel’s basing,” the prosecutor’s office said.

Due to non-compliance with maritime safety requirements, the ship sank, which caused the leakage of more than 1.2 tons of residual oil products into the seaport area. Experts estimated the environmental damage at almost 16 million.
The shipowners were charged with polluting the sea within the internal sea waters of Ukraine with substances harmful to human life and health and abuse of authority.
