US to assess Russia’s demands for ceasefire in Black Sea

Washington will carefully consider the conditions put forward by Moscow after it “agreed to a ceasefire in the Black Sea.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the United States will assess Russia’s demands after it “in principle” agreed to a ceasefire in the Black Sea. Reuters reports.

“Following our meeting (in Saudi Arabia)… the Russians have specified a number of conditions that they want to see met in order to achieve a ceasefire in the Black Sea. So we plan to assess that,” Rubio said.

The head of the State Department added that US officials will work to better understand Russia’s position and what it is asking for in return, after which they will present it to the US president to decide on further steps.

In particular, Russia’s demands include the lifting of some EU sanctions. The European Commission, in turn, stated that one of the main conditions for lifting or changing sanctions is the withdrawal of all Russian troops from Ukraine.

The day before, the United States and Ukraine agreed to support the safety of navigation, prevent the use of force, and prevent the use of commercial vessels for military purposes in the Black Sea.

In turn, the Kremlin stated that the agreement on shipping safety in the Black Sea would enter into force only after partial lifting of restrictions against Russia.

The White House also reported that, following negotiations between the American and Russian delegations on March 24, the United States would help restore Russia’s access to the world market for agricultural products and fertilizers.
