EU approves 17th package of sanctions against Russia, — Kaia Kallas

The Vice President of the European Commission announced that the EU has approved the 17th package of sanctions against Russia, affecting almost 200 ships of the shadow fleet.

Kaia Kallas reported this in X.

“The EU has approved the 17th package of sanctions against Russia, affecting almost 200 ships of the shadow fleet. The new measures are also aimed at addressing hybrid threats and human rights. Additional sanctions are being prepared against Russia. The longer Russia wages war, the tougher our response will be,” Kallas reported on social networks.

It should be noted that other officials have not yet confirmed the approval of the sanctions, but the EU is due to adopt the new package today, May 20.

Recall that the package provides for an even stronger blow to the Russian shadow fleet (almost 200 ships, including oil tankers), and also creates a legal basis for sanctions against the fleet that destroys cables or servers underwater.

About 30 more companies involved in evading sanctions, in particular in the field of dual-use goods, are also included, and there are also 75 additional individual sanctions against individuals and companies related to the defense-industrial complex.

A new legal framework for propaganda media is also provided. More than 20 legal entities and individuals that spread disinformation have been added to the sanctions list.

Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reported that the 17th package of EU sanctions against Russia includes restrictions against 189 vessels of the “shadow fleet.”
