Documentary about Ukrainian polar explorers to be released on big screens

The film will tell about the journey to the continent on the icebreaker “Noosfera” and the work of the 30th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition.

On September 4, Anton Ptushkin’s documentary “Antarctica”, dedicated to the work of the scientific station “Akademik Vernadskyi”, will be released in Ukrainian cinemas. This is reported by “Suspilne Culture”.

The film crew spent a week at the station in March 2025, recording the daily life and scientific work of the members of the 30th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition. General preparation and editing took six months.

The film recreates the full route of the expedition – from the departure of the Ukrainian icebreaker “Noosphere” from the port to its arrival on the continent, as well as living conditions at the station, wintering of polar explorers, the work of scientific laboratories and observation of the unique flora and fauna of Antarctica.

Director of the National Antarctic Science Center Yevhen Dykyi emphasizes that the film demonstrates the world level of Ukrainian research: “We can make scientific films no worse than NASA or National Geographic.” First Deputy Minister of Education and Science Yevhen Kudryavets adds that the film “will make Antarctica closer to every Ukrainian.”

Producer Yulia Grebenevska calls the film “a film about big dreams” and emphasizes that its release coincides with a time when it is especially important for Ukrainians to remember what we are fighting for. The film has no age restrictions and is recommended for family and school viewing.

As USM previously wrote, a Ukrainian icebreaker recorded the singing of rare whales.
