The Shipping Register inspected the Ukrainian icebreaker “Noosfera” in Cape Town

Specialists of the Ukrainian Shipping Register conducted another inspection of the vessel “Noosfera” in the port of Cape Town, South Africa.
The inspection began after the completion of the fifth Antarctic season of the Ukrainian scientific research vessel, which lasted from October 17, 2025 to May 28, 2026, the Shipping Register reported.
“Noosfera” is a Ukrainian scientific research vessel-icebreaker, the flagship of the Ukrainian scientific research fleet. Until 2021 – RRS James Clark Ross. Belongs to the National Antarctic Science Center. Former flagship of the British Antarctic Survey.
Main characteristics of the vessel:
• length – 99.04 m;
• width – 18.85 m;
• crew – 26 people;
• can additionally accommodate up to 50 scientists;
• autonomy of navigation – up to two months.
The vessel is equipped with laboratories and winch systems that allow exploration of the seabed at depths of up to 8 km.
For a vessel operating in difficult conditions and supporting Ukrainian scientific expeditions, technical readiness is of key importance for the safety of the crew, scientists, and subsequent voyages.
