EU considers new sanctions against Russia’s sanctioned fleet

EU foreign ministers are discussing the introduction of additional measures against ships and companies that help Russia transport sanctioned oil.

According to Bloomberg, EU foreign ministers are considering mechanisms for putting pressure on states that register ships of the so-called “shadow fleet” to stop sanctions evasion schemes at a meeting in Brussels.

European foreign policy chief Kaia Kallas noted that the fight against the “shadow fleet” directly affects Russia’s ability to finance war.

The document, prepared by Poland, proposes new regulations and coordination of actions, in particular regarding the possibility of inspecting ships. It also refers to active work with states that issue flags to ships, as well as with port and coastal countries.

The proposed steps may be included in a new package of EU sanctions. The EU plans to prepare legal proposals on sanctions and financing of Ukraine by the December summit, and the issue will also be raised during the G20 meetings.

Previously Canada imposed new sanctions against the sanctioned Russian fleet.
