One Ukrainian evacuated from “MV Hondius” liner after hantavirus outbreak — MFA

Four Ukrainians from the “MV Hondius” crew will take the ship to the Netherlands. One Ukrainian will be evacuated there on a special flight.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reported that one of the Ukrainians will be evacuated from the MV Hondius liner, where an outbreak of hantavirus was previously recorded. This is reported by Hromadske.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this is a partial evacuation of the crew on a special flight to the Netherlands. Ukrainian diplomats are maintaining contact with the Ukrainian citizen who is to leave the ship.

Four more Ukrainians remain on board as part of the crew and will participate in the liner’s transfer to the Netherlands. Upon arrival, they are planned to be sent to a medical facility for quarantine.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that currently no symptoms of the disease have been detected among Ukrainian citizens on board.

The situation is being monitored by the Department of Consular Service, the embassies of Ukraine in the Netherlands and Spain, as well as the consulate in Malaga.

As a reminder, the MV Hondius, a cruise ship under the Dutch flag, set off on a three-week voyage from Argentina with routes to Antarctica and the Falkland Islands. After the hantavirus outbreak, the ship anchored off Cape Verde.

As of early May, at least five cases of infection with a rare type of hantavirus, which in some cases can be transmitted between people, were confirmed on board. Three people have died, including a couple from the Netherlands.

Earlier, the media suggested that the hantavirus outbreak on the cruise ship could have occurred due to a garbage dump in Argentina.
