Ukraine, Britain and Latvia to launch joint verification of grain origin

The countries signed a trilateral Memorandum of Understanding, which should help identify agricultural products illegally exported from the temporarily occupied territories.

The document on the Grain Verification Scheme (GVS) was signed on October 21, the press service of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy reports.

GVS allows determining the geographical origin of agricultural products using isotopic and chemical analysis. Samples will be compared with a reference base of products with confirmed origin.

The inspection will cover wheat, corn, barley and sunflower seeds. The data obtained should help identify batches of dubious origin and form an evidence base regarding the possible illegal export of Ukrainian agricultural products from the occupied territories.

The memorandum also provides for access by authorized bodies of the three countries to the GVS system, exchange of scientific data, coordination of specialized laboratories and joint actions in case of detection of suspicious batches. It is noted that the mechanism should complicate the legalization of stolen Ukrainian grain on world markets under the guise of products of legal origin.

Earlier, Israeli importers offered Ukraine a mechanism for checking grain from the occupied territories.
