A Russian oligarch is suing the British government over the confiscation of his superyacht

Russian oligarch Sergei Naumenko is suing the UK government over the confiscation of his £38million superyacht Phi.

Naumenko, who is not under the sanctions of Great Britain regarding Russia, demands to cancel the arrest and compensate for the damages, writes Radio.Svoboda.

Hearings in court regarding the further fate of the yacht will take place in July. However, the law used to detain the vessel does not require proof of the yacht’s owner’s ties to Putin’s regime. According to the British government, it is enough that the oligarch is a citizen of the Russian Federation.

The vessel was arrested back in March 2022. Then-Transport Minister Grant Shapps announced that the seizure of the vessel “turned an icon of Russian power and wealth into a clear and stark warning to Putin and his cronies.”
