EU ambassadors agree on 16th package of restrictions against Russia: over 70 vessels may be subject to sanctions

The new sanctions will target Russia’s aluminum industry and tighten restrictions on oil exports.

Another 13 banks and 73 tankers of Russia’s “shadow fleet” will also be hit, the FT reports.

The sanctions are expected to be officially adopted on February 24 at a meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels.

Initially, the new package will ban imports of Russian primary aluminum. Unprocessed aluminum from the Russian Federation accounts for about 6% of aluminum imports into the EU.

In addition, the new package will expand the list of tankers belonging to Russia’s “shadow fleet”. Currently, it is 73 vessels.

As we will recall, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously stressed that the 16th EU sanctions package should apply to Russian oil and the entire shadow fleet, as well as captains and crew members of vessels.
