Sudan has agreed with Russia to establish a naval base in the Red Sea

Sudan has signed a final agreement with Russia to establish a Russian naval base on the Red Sea coast.

Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Yousef Sharif said the agreement had been signed and they were in “full agreement” with Russia on the creation of the port, Reuters reported.

He said the only thing left to do was ratify the deal.

“Sudan and Russia have reached an understanding on the agreement on the Russian naval base,” Yousef said at a press briefing in Moscow on Wednesday, February 12.

Under the terms of the agreement, the base will be able to house up to 300 Russian military personnel and no more than four ships at a time.

Sudan has a strategic location on the Red Sea coast, making it an important partner for countries interested in a naval presence in the region. The deal could significantly strengthen Russia’s position in Africa.

It should be noted that the US, China and France also have a naval presence in the seas off the Horn of Africa – a key strategic and trade route.
