The UN General Assembly adopted a draft resolution on reparations to Ukraine

On Monday, November 14, the UN General Assembly adopted a draft resolution on the creation of a mechanism to compensate Ukraine for damages caused by russia’s military aggression.
94 countries voted “for”, 14 – “against”, 73 abstained. Russia, Belarus, China, Iran, Syria and Eritrea are expected to be among the countries that voted against.
The resolution provides for the appointment of reparations by russia in favor of Ukraine. The document also contains recognition by the UN states of the need to create an international mechanism for compensation for damages caused to Ukraine as a result of the war with russia, and recommendations to countries regarding the creation of an international registry of damages.
According to the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN, Serhiy Kislytsia, the resolution is “a declaration that russian federation should be held accountable for violations of international law in Ukraine.”
Despite the fact that the resolution is of a recommendatory nature, this document can become a legal basis for the creation of a mechanism for the enforcement of reparations. The adoption of the document can speed up the actions of Western countries to allocate frozen russian assets worth at least $300 billion for the recovery of Ukraine.
