Ukrainian sunflower oil exports in February fell to a 10-year low

Producers are facing a shortage of raw materials, and supply volumes are decreasing for the second season in a row.
Ukrainian exports of sunflower oil remain at a low level due to a shortage of raw materials, which does not allow producers to work stably in the long term. This is reported by APK-Inform.
According to operational data, in February 2024, 325 thousand tons of sunflower oil were exported from Ukraine. This is 14% less than in January and the lowest monthly figure since the beginning of the 2024/25 season. At the same time, this is the worst result for February in the last decade.
Despite the general decline, last month there was a certain revival of sunflower sales by farmers, which may contribute to an increase in production and exports in March-April.
At the same time, global competition in the vegetable oil market remains high. Although the reduction in supply from the main producing countries in the second half of the season may support demand for Ukrainian products, the arrival of a new crop of sunflower oil from Argentina in the spring-summer will partially compensate for the shortage, which will limit the possibility of price increases.
In September-February of the 2024/25 season, Ukraine exported 2.4 million tons of sunflower oil. This is 24% less than in the same period last season, and the worst result for the first half of the marketing year since 2016/17 MY.
The main sales market remains the EU countries – they accounted for 54% of all exports. However, the unexpected leader among individual importing countries was India, which purchased 417 thousand tons of Ukrainian sunflower oil – 5 times more than in the same period last season.
The day before, USM wrote that US trade wars could have a positive impact on Ukrainian sunflower — by reducing the share of American soybean oil in European markets.
