The Russian Federation began exporting diesel fuel to Chile, expanding supplies of petroleum products to Latin America in connection with the search for new sales markets.

In April, the Russians loaded two ships in the Baltic port of Primorsk with 73,000 tons of diesel fuel. The ships headed to the port of Guayacan in Chile, Reuters reports citing data from Refinitiv Eikon.

After the EU embargo on the import of oil products of Russian origin came into force in February, the Russian Federation redirected its seaborne deliveries of diesel fuel to Asia, Africa, the Middle East and, increasingly, to Latin America.

According to Refinitiv, in January-April, Russia exported about 1.5 million tons of diesel to Latin and South American countries, mainly to Brazil, compared to 211,000 tons for the whole of 2022.

Russian diesel fuel is “conquering” market share in the US, which traditionally accounts for most of Brazil’s diesel imports. Brazil buys about 30% of diesel fuel abroad.
