Germany did not allow a tanker suspected of transporting sanctioned Russian oil to leave

Germany has banned a tanker from the Russian Federation’s so-called “shadow fleet” from leaving German waters. The tanker is likely loaded with Russian oil.

The tanker was heading from Russia to Egypt with almost 100,000 tons of oil on board, “European Truth” writes, citing local media. On Friday, January 10, the vessel’s engine failed in the Baltic Sea north of the island of Rügen.

After that, the vessel was towed away from the German island of Rügen for safety reasons. After the main engine was restored, the vessel’s captain asked for permission to continue his route, but the Hamburg customs service and the German Ministry of Transport refused him this.

Currently, the local government plans to find out whether the vessel is trying to circumvent the EU embargo on the supply of Russian oil – for this purpose, customs officers boarded the vessel on Tuesday, January 14.

Separately, the safety of the vessel is being questioned due to its age – the Eventin is almost 20 years old.
