Britain was the first among G7 countries to impose sanctions against Russian gas tankers

The UK has announced a new package of sanctions against Russian “shadow fleet” vessels and military suppliers.

This was reported on the British government website.

The UK government has announced the introduction of a new package of sanctions against Russia, which includes 70 individuals and legal entities, vessels and structures associated with supporting the Russian military economy.

In particular, more than 20 oil tankers of the Russian “shadow fleet” have been sanctioned. London has also expanded restrictions on insurance companies and other maritime service providers that, according to British authorities, facilitate the trade in Russian oil in circumvention of Western sanctions.

Separately, the UK has become the first G7 country to impose sanctions on several liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels recently purchased by Russia to service the sanctioned Arctic LNG-2 project. The British government notes that this project is one of the Kremlin’s sources of income from energy exports.

According to the government, British sanctions significantly limit Russia’s ability to trade in energy resources. In particular, in 2025 the Arctic LNG-2 terminal exported only 1.3 million tons of LNG with a design capacity of more than 13.5 million tons per year.

Earlier, USM reported that tankers of the “shadow fleet” began to avoid the English Channel after the detention of the vessel by Britain.
