Iranian missiles hit two UAE tankers: a sailor died, two Ukrainians were among the injured

Among the eight injured are two Ukrainian citizens. An Indian sailor from the Mombasa tanker died.

Two UAE tankers were hit by Iranian cruise missiles in the Strait of Hormuz. This is reported by Reuters.

The Mombasa and Al Bahiyah vessels were attacked in the southern shipping lane of the strait – in the territorial waters of Oman. A crew member of the Mombasa tanker, an Indian citizen, was killed. Eight more people were injured, four of them seriously. Among the injured are six Indian citizens and two Ukrainian citizens.

Fires broke out on both vessels, which were brought under control. The tankers suffered material damage. The UAE Foreign Ministry condemned the attack as a gross violation of international law and stated that it reserves the full right to respond.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps actually took responsibility for the strike. The IRGC statement refers to two “violating” supertankers. Iran accused the US of “inciting ships to use an illegal route” and warned that cooperation with the “enemy-aggressor” would only lead to losses, delays in the opening of the strait, and a global energy crisis.

The essence of the conflict is in the routes. Iran demands that ships pass only through its corridor and with its permission. The US, in turn, recommends a southern route along the Omani coast — that is where the attack took place.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump announced the resumption of Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The price of Brent oil rose by 7.8% to $81.92 per barrel. This is still well below the almost $120 at the height of the war.

Separately, the UKMTO reported that an unknown projectile hit the tanker 40 nautical miles northeast of Qalhat, Oman. The hit fell on the starboard engine room, and the entire crew is safe. It is not yet clear whether this is the same incident.
