Great Britain will start detaining uninsured tankers carrying Russian oil

The British government has announced that it will detain tankers that pass through the English Channel and have “questionable insurance”.

The UK Department for Transport will require vessels with “suspect insurance” to provide details of their insurance status when transiting the English Channel. Failure to provide approved insurance may result in vessel detention, writes Splash 24/7.

The country’s government noted that such a decision is another step to combat “malicious Russian-backed maritime activity near Great Britain.”

As the publication notes, about 10 tankers of the so-called shadow fleet usually pass through the English Channel every day. In addition, a similar decision is expected from the countries of the European Union.

Along with Britain, India, which is the largest buyer of Russian oil, will also start checking insurance certificates on all ships entering the country.

USM previously reported that 18 Russian oil tankers and four LNG tankers were under British sanctions.
