Shipping canal bypassing Russia to be opened in Poland this year
We are talking about a navigable canal through the Baltic (or Vistula) Spit. It will be opened after testing the lock and dredging.
The canal will allow vessels to call at the port of Elblag bypassing the Kaliningrad region (Russian Federation). The first vessels are planned to be launched this year, according to the CFTS.
The project provides for the construction of a protective port on the side of the Gdansk Bay, a canal with a locking structure and moorings, as well as road infrastructure with drawbridges and an artificial island.
The length of the new waterway will be 22.9 km. The width of the canal through the Vistula Spit is 1.3 km, the depth is 5 m. Vessels up to 100 m long and up to 20 m wide can navigate through the canal.
