The Russian Federation sent its ships to the Libyan port of Tobruk

For several years, the Russian Federation has been trying to create a naval base for its fleet in Tobruk.

The Russian missile cruiser “Varyag” and frigate “Admiral Shaposhnikov”, accompanied by two submarines, arrived at the port of Tobruk in eastern Libya. Gospodarka Morska writes about it.

Tobruk is home to the headquarters of the Libyan Navy, which cooperates with the regime of General Khalifa Haftar. He opposes the Western-recognized government in Tripoli.

The Kremlin announced that the ships’ visit to Libya would last three days. Before that, ships entered Egypt.

In recent years, Russia has been trying to create a naval base for its fleet in Tobruk. To this end, it supports the Haftar regime. According to the Libyan government in Tripoli and the US State Department, Moscow has also started forming the African Legion in Libya, which is supposed to replace mercenaries from the Wagner PMC. The first formations should be ready in the summer. The aggressor country will use these forces not only in Libya, but also in Burkina Faso, Mali, the Central African Republic and Niger.

“The Russian armed forces are moving towards a scenario where they can operate freely through the port of Tobruk. Over time, this port will turn into a Russian naval base,” noted the Italian portal ItaMilRadar, which specializes in monitoring aircraft movements over Italy and ships in the Mediterranean Sea.

According to analysts, although the infrastructure of the port in Tobruk leaves much to be desired, this should not lead to the assumption that it will take a long time before the potential base can become operational.
