Latvia banned the import of agricultural products from Russia and Belarus


The Latvian Parliament adopted amendments to the Law on Agriculture and Rural Development. These amendments prohibit the import of products from the Russian Federation and Belarus.

Thus, the Diet of Latvia banned the import of agricultural and fodder products from the Russian Federation and Belarus for consumption in Latvia, Ukrinform reports.

According to the amendments, the import of products from third countries is also prohibited if they originate from Russia or Belarus. The transit of products was not prohibited.

In the first 10 months of 2023, the import of Russian agricultural and feed products to Latvia amounted to 280 million euros. In general, 90% of the total import of agricultural products from the Russian Federation to Latvia was fodder, grain, peas and rapeseed oil.

Earlier, USM reported that the Minister of Transport of Latvia, Kaspars Briskens, proposed to ban the import of Russian and Belarusian grain to the European Union.
