Rosmorport terminated the contract for the construction of icebreakers due to sanctions

Due to the refusal of Western suppliers, the Russian Onega Shipyard lost access to critical components.

Rosmorport has terminated the contract with the Onega Shipyard for the construction of new icebreakers, the Center for Countering Disinformation reports.

“It was about 95-meter vessels of the Icebreaker7 class, which were to become a “new” for the Russian Federation. The order was planned to be handed over last year, later postponed to 2026, but the plant never managed to even begin full-fledged construction,” the report says.

In particular, the CCD emphasized that due to the refusal of Western suppliers, the Russian plant lost access to critical components that Russia cannot produce independently.

The problems of the Onega Shipyard are not an exception, but a systemic trend for the entire sector. Recently, it became known about a 70% reduction in the staff at the Khabarovsk Shipyard due to a lack of orders.

USM previously reported that in April 2025, a large-scale fire occurred at the Onega Shipbuilding Plant in Petrozavodsk, with casualties.

Reference. The Onega Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Plant is located on the shores of Lake Onega in Petrozavodsk, the capital of the Republic of Karelia. The enterprise is located at the intersection of Russia’s main waterways, connecting the Baltic, White, Caspian, Azov and Black Seas.
