EU is moving to a “policy of containment” of the Russian shadow fleet — Macron

In the coming days, the chiefs of staff of the EU countries, in coordination with NATO, will gather to develop joint steps against the Russian fleet.
French President Emmanuel Macron said that the EU is moving from observation to an active policy of deterring the “shadow fleet of Russia”. This is reported by “Ukrinform”.
“We want to increase pressure on Russia to force it to return to negotiations. It is in this context that the 19th package of EU sanctions, as well as new measures aimed at blocking shadow export schemes, are working,” the politician noted.
Macron emphasized that the EU is now ready to apply direct measures against suspicious vessels in European waters to reduce Moscow’s ability to circumvent the oil embargo.
According to estimates, the “shadow fleet” includes from 800 to 1,000 vessels, which provide up to 40% of Russia’s income to finance the war against Ukraine.
The day before, French authorities detained two senior crew members of a Russian “shadow fleet” tanker suspected of involvement in the launch of drones in Denmark.
