Hearings against Russia for violating the UN Maritime Convention continued in The Hague

Ukraine will present its closing speech today, and on October 5 the Russian side will speak.

On October 3, hearings in the case of Ukraine against Russia regarding violation of the coastal state’s rights under the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea will continue in The Hague. “Ukrinform” writes about this.

At the hearings, questions regarding the merits of the case, its jurisdiction and admissibility are considered. The opening and closing statements of the parties are public, and the open parts of the hearings are also broadcast live.

As previously reported, the substantive hearing began on September 23 and will continue until October 5. The first meeting of the tribunal on this case was held in May 2017, and a memorandum with evidence of Russia’s violations of Ukraine’s sovereign rights in the Black and Azov Seas and the Kerch Strait was submitted on February 19, 2018. The Russian Federation, for its part, objected to the tribunal’s jurisdiction to consider this claim.

As USM wrote, earlier Russia was expelled from the Danube Commission because of armed aggression against Ukraine.
