As a result of the coordinated actions of the Ukrainian military in the port of Kavkaz, it was possible to significantly damage the ferry that the occupiers used for military purposes.
This is reported by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
On Tuesday, July 23, a grouping of forces and means of the Naval Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, as well as other units of the Defense Forces, attacked the port of Kavkaz, which is located near Kerch, and caused significant damage to the Russian ferry “Slavyanin”.
“The Russians used the ferry to transport rail cars, motor vehicles and containers for military purposes. “Slavyanin” is the third and last ferry that the Russian Federation had in this region,” the report says.
Military expert, retired lieutenant general, ex-deputy chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Ihor Romanenko noted on the air of the telethon that this is very important for the logistical support of units in the territory of the temporarily occupied Crimea.
“This means, if you look north on the map, the provision of parts of the Russian Armed Forces on the southern front of the war. Taking into account the fact that they had previously struck other ferry vessels, they are actually not combat-ready. Combat damage will lead to the fact that this crossing will not function,” the expert explained.
In this way, an important logistical route is interrupted for the occupiers.
“The Kerch (note – Crimean) bridge does not work at full capacity, this reduces the potential of providing for enemy troops and the potential of conducting hostilities. This is significant, if we take into account the situation we have on the eastern and southern fronts,” Ihor Romanenko added.
It will be recalled that in November 2023, the ferry suffered a side hole in the Black Sea near the Bulgarian Cape Shabla. It is also interesting that the ferry “Slavyanin” ran on the Varna-Caucasus line for about 10 years, transporting railway tanks. Even then, experts noted that the new route was uncharacteristic of the ship.
Previously, USM reported that in May, the Navy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine attacked the ferry crossing and the oil terminal of the port of Kavkaz in the Krasnodar region of the Russian Federation. Later, British intelligence analyzed Ukraine’s attack on a Russian ferry crossing in occupied Crimea near Kerch.
