The EU called the Russian attack on a civilian bulk carrier an unprecedented escalation

The EU has called on Russia to stop threatening global food security and using hunger as a weapon in the region and beyond.

The EU condemned Russia’s attack on a civilian grain ship in the Black Sea on September 12. This was discussed at the meeting of the OSCE Security Cooperation Forum in Vienna, Ukrinform writes.

Representatives of the European Union called it an “unprecedented escalation” and a serious violation of international law. The EU called on Russia to respect freedom of navigation in the Black Sea, stop threatening global food security and use hunger as a weapon in the region and beyond.

“In connection with the event that happened last week, the EU and its member states strongly condemn the attack on a civilian vessel carrying grain in the Black Sea. The attack on a transiting commercial ship is an unprecedented escalation and another serious violation of international law by Russia,” the statement emphasized.

In addition, the EU condemned Russia’s indiscriminate attacks on Ukrainian cities and the shelling of Donetsk region, which killed three employees of the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The statement emphasized that such actions are war crimes, and all those responsible will be brought to justice.

It will be recalled that on September 12, a Russian missile hit a commercial ship that left the port of Chornomorsk in the Odesa region with a cargo of grain. The day before, USM wrote that on the day the Russians attacked a bulk carrier in Odesa, their target could have been a tanker carrying fuel. In this way, the enemy would cause an ecological disaster.
