EU prepares new sanctions: Russian aluminum and over 70 ships may be banned


The European Union is considering a new package of sanctions that includes a gradual ban on imports of Russian aluminum and other restrictions.

Also being considered is the disconnection of 15 Russian banks from SWIFT and restrictions against the “shadow fleet” that transports Russian oil, Bloomberg reports.

According to the publication’s sources, the sanctions measures may be officially proposed on the eve of the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

If the sanctions are adopted, a quota system will operate for a year, after which imports of Russian aluminum to the EU will be completely stopped.

As for sanctions against the transportation of Russian oil, the EU may impose restrictions on more than 70 tankers.

The approval of the sanctions package requires the consent of all member states, so its final content may still change.

Until now, the EU has not had a complete ban on imports of Russian metals. Last year, the European Union imported 320 thousand tons of aluminum from Russia. tons of unprocessed aluminum is about 6% of total supplies. At the same time, Russia has increased aluminum exports to China.
